A small business is a company that employs 500 or fewer employees (McKinney, 2009) and is vital to the success of the U.S. economy with 23 million small businesses in America today (U.S. Small Business, 2013). Small businesses account for 40% of all retail sales (SBA, 2013) and have been continuously growing since 1990.

While large corporations have eliminated four million jobs, small businesses have created eight million new jobs (U.S. Small Business, 2013). According to the Small Business Administration (2013), small businesses have provided 55% of jobs and 66% of new jobs since the 1970s.
